The Technology Expedition

January 30, 2008

Today’s students represent the first generations to grow up with new technology. That is, they have been using technology their entire lives. This technology includes using computers, video games, and other digital devices. The average college grads have spent less than5,000 hours of their lives reading, but over 10,000 hours playing video games (not to mention 20,000 hours watching TV). These students are constantly engaging in text messaging, chatting, and answering emails.

These students are called Digital Natives and teachers are considered Digital Immigrants. These students are able to learn the new language of technology easily. Therefore, if we want to teach these students, we must confront this issue. In order to accomplish this task, we will need to reconsider both our method of instruction and our content. In other words, we must be able to integrate technology into our classroom instruction.
